Darkwatch Game Overview

Darkwatch: Curse of the West thrusts players into the boots of Jericho Cross, a notorious outlaw turned vampire hunter in the supernatural Wild West. After inadvertently releasing the ancient vampire lord Lazarus Malkoth during a train heist gone wrong, Jericho is infected with vampirism and recruited by the secretive Darkwatch organisation to track down his maker. Players navigate a unique blend of Western and gothic horror environments while mastering both conventional firearms and vampiric powers that evolve based on moral choices made throughout the campaign. The gameplay balances frantic gunslinging action with strategic use of supernatural abilities such as levitation, blood vision, and shadow walking, allowing players to approach combat encounters from multiple angles. With branching storylines affected by a morality system, atmospheric visuals that showcase a frontier besieged by supernatural forces, and multiplayer modes featuring unique vampire versus hunter dynamics, Darkwatch delivers a distinctive experience that stands apart from conventional first person shooters on the original Xbox.

Darkwatch

In the twilight years of the nineteenth century, an ancient evil stirs beneath the rugged terrain of the American frontier. Jericho Cross, a notorious outlaw, embarks on what he believes to be his greatest heist, targeting a mysterious armoured train traversing the desolate plains under the cover of night. Unbeknownst to Jericho, this train belongs to the Darkwatch, a centuries old secret organisation dedicated to combating supernatural threats that lurk in the shadows of human civilisation. As Jericho breaches the most secure compartment on the train, he unwittingly releases Lazarus Malkoth, a powerful vampire lord who had been imprisoned by the Darkwatch for over a century. In the ensuing chaos, Jericho is bitten by Malkoth and left for dead as the vampire lord escapes to reclaim his former glory. Jericho awakens to discover that he has been cursed with vampirism, caught in a limbo between humanity and monstrosity, with newfound supernatural abilities emerging alongside an insatiable thirst for blood. His predicament catches the attention of Cassidy Sharp, a veteran Darkwatch agent who offers Jericho a proposition: join the Darkwatch in their pursuit of Malkoth, and they might find a way to reverse his curse.

The Darkwatch Brotherhood

The Darkwatch organisation operates from a massive fortress carved into the side of a mountain, a blend of Victorian architecture and advanced steam powered technology that stands as a testament to their long history of supernatural warfare. Founded in 1666 by a group of scholars, mystics, and warriors who witnessed firsthand the devastation that otherworldly entities could unleash upon humanity, the Darkwatch has since evolved into a highly disciplined and well equipped force. Cassidy introduces Jericho to the inner workings of the organisation, revealing that its members are recruited from various backgrounds, some voluntarily joining after personal encounters with the supernatural, others being drafted due to their unique skills or circumstances. The Darkwatch arsenal consists of specially designed weapons that combine conventional firearms with arcane enhancements, capable of affecting creatures that would otherwise be impervious to normal means of harm. Jericho undergoes a rigorous training programme, learning to control his vampiric powers while struggling against the bloodlust that threatens to consume him. The leader of the Darkwatch, Commander Harrington, remains sceptical of Jericho, viewing him as a potential liability rather than an asset. Despite this, Cassidy believes that Jericho represents their best chance at tracking down Malkoth, as the blood connection between them allows Jericho to sense the vampire lord presence and movements.

The Curse Unfolds

As Jericho adapts to his new reality, he discovers that his vampiric transformation grants him extraordinary abilities that prove invaluable in the field. Enhanced strength allows him to overpower enemies with ease, while supernatural speed enables him to move with blinding velocity across the battlefield. His senses are heightened to preternatural levels, allowing him to detect enemies from great distances and in complete darkness. Most notably, Jericho develops the ability to manipulate shadows, using them as weapons or as means of transportation through a technique known as shadow walking. However, these powers come at a terrible cost. The vampiric curse gradually erodes his humanity, manifesting as violent impulses that become increasingly difficult to suppress. Jericho experiences vivid nightmares and hallucinations, glimpses into the dark history of vampiric bloodlines and the atrocities committed by those who embraced the curse fully. Through these visions, he learns more about Malkoth, discovering that the ancient vampire was once a brilliant Darkwatch scientist who experimented on himself in pursuit of immortality, only to become the very thing the organisation had sworn to destroy. Jericho also realises that the curse presents him with a choice: he can either embrace the darkness and gain even greater power at the cost of his soul, or he can resist the temptation and strive to maintain his humanity, potentially finding redemption.

The Path of Redemption

The pursuit of Malkoth leads Jericho and Cassidy across the frontier, from abandoned mining towns to ancient Native American burial grounds tainted by supernatural corruption. Along their journey, they encounter various civilians caught in the crossfire of this supernatural conflict. These encounters present Jericho with moral dilemmas that test his fading humanity. When faced with innocent victims of vampiric attacks, he can either feed on them to enhance his powers or heal them at the cost of weakening himself. Each choice shapes not only his abilities but also his relationship with Cassidy and the Darkwatch. As they track Malkoth across the frontier, Jericho and Cassidy form a bond forged in shared danger and mutual respect. Cassidy reveals her own tragic past with the supernatural, explaining how her family was slaughtered by a lesser vampire when she was just a child, leading to her recruitment by the Darkwatch. Through their conversations, Jericho learns that Cassidy believes in his potential for redemption, seeing in him a strength of character that transcends his cursed nature. Their investigations reveal that Malkoth is systematically hunting down and absorbing the power of lesser vampires and other supernatural entities, growing stronger with each conquest. More disturbingly, they discover that he has begun creating a new breed of vampire thralls, beings that retain enough intelligence to serve as effective soldiers while remaining utterly loyal to their master.

The Shadow War

The conflict escalates as Malkoth amasses an army of the undead, launching coordinated attacks on frontier settlements and Darkwatch outposts. These attacks serve a dual purpose: to weaken the organisation that imprisoned him while simultaneously expanding his territory and influence. The Darkwatch mobilises all available agents, yet they find themselves outnumbered and outmanoeuvred at every turn. Jericho proves instrumental in these engagements, his vampiric abilities allowing him to combat supernatural threats that would overwhelm normal humans. His presence on the battlefield inspires both awe and fear among the Darkwatch ranks, as they witness firsthand the power he wields. Commander Harrington reluctantly acknowledges Jericho value, though continues to monitor him closely for signs of betrayal. Through captured thralls and ancient texts recovered from Malkoth former hideouts, the Darkwatch learns of his ultimate goal: to trigger a ritual known as the Darkest Night, which would permanently eclipse the sun and create a world where vampires could rule unopposed. The ritual requires specific artefacts and must be performed at a specific location during a rare astronomical alignment that occurs once every hundred years. As the date of this alignment approaches, Jericho experiences increasingly vivid visions of Malkoth activities, allowing the Darkwatch to intercept and thwart some of his efforts to gather the necessary components for the ritual.

Betrayal at Dusk

Just as the Darkwatch believes they have gained the upper hand in the conflict, they suffer a devastating setback. A high ranking member of the organisation, Professor Wells, is revealed to be a long term thrall of Malkoth, having been turned decades ago and tasked with infiltrating the Darkwatch. Wells sabotages the fortress defences and steals crucial information regarding the remaining artefacts needed for the Darkest Night ritual. The betrayal results in heavy casualties among the Darkwatch and allows Malkoth to complete his preparations unopposed. In the aftermath of the attack, tensions within the organisation reach a breaking point. Some members advocate for extreme measures, including the use of forbidden technologies and rituals that the Darkwatch had previously deemed too dangerous. Others, led by Cassidy, argue that such actions would make them no better than the monsters they fight. Jericho finds himself caught in the middle of this ideological conflict, his unique perspective as both hunter and hunted providing insights that neither faction fully appreciates. Through his intensifying blood connection with Malkoth, Jericho determines that the final stage of the ritual will take place at Redhawk Bluff, an imposing mesa that Native American tribes had long considered a place where the boundary between worlds grew thin. With time running out and the Darkwatch in disarray, Jericho and Cassidy decide to pursue Malkoth themselves, knowing that they might be the only ones capable of stopping him before the alignment occurs.

The Final Confrontation

Jericho and Cassidy arrive at Redhawk Bluff to find that Malkoth has already begun the ritual. The site has been transformed into a nightmarish reflection of its former self, with ancient stone structures rising from the earth and the sky above churning with unnatural energies. Malkoth thralls guard the perimeter while their master channels dark powers at the centre of an elaborate circular platform atop the mesa. Fighting their way through the undead hordes, Jericho and Cassidy reach Malkoth as the astronomical alignment nears its peak. The confrontation pushes Jericho to his limits, forcing him to draw deeper upon his vampiric abilities than ever before. As the battle rages, Jericho finds himself increasingly tempted by the darkness within, the promise of unlimited power if he would only surrender to the curse completely. Malkoth, recognising this internal struggle, offers Jericho a place at his side, appealing to their shared blood and the inevitable isolation that immortality brings. In a pivotal moment, Cassidy is gravely wounded while protecting Jericho from a devastating attack by Malkoth. Her sacrifice clarifies everything for Jericho, who rejects Malkoth offer and embraces his role as her protector and as a defender of humanity. Drawing upon both his human resolve and vampiric powers, Jericho engages Malkoth in a final, cataclysmic battle that tears reality itself as the ritual reaches its culmination. Just as the alignment peaks, Jericho manages to disrupt the ritual, redirecting its energy back at Malkoth, who is consumed by the very darkness he sought to unleash.

Legacy and Impact

In the aftermath of the battle at Redhawk Bluff, Jericho carries a wounded Cassidy back to the Darkwatch fortress. Though the immediate threat posed by Malkoth has been eliminated, the victory comes with significant costs. Parts of the frontier have been irrevocably changed by the supernatural energies unleashed during the conflict, creating new threats that will require the vigilance of the Darkwatch for years to come. The organisation itself undergoes a period of introspection and restructuring, with lessons learned from the infiltration by Professor Wells leading to improved security measures and a renewed focus on their founding principles. The surviving members of the Darkwatch view Jericho with new respect, acknowledging that his actions saved countless lives and potentially the entire world. Commander Harrington formally offers him a permanent position within the organisation, recognising that his unique abilities make him an invaluable asset in their ongoing mission. Jericho, while still struggling with his vampiric curse, finds a measure of peace in his new purpose. The blood connection he shared with Malkoth has diminished but not disappeared entirely, suggesting that some essence of the vampire lord might still exist in some form. This lingering connection serves as both a warning and a reminder to Jericho of the constant vigilance required to maintain his humanity. As he continues his work with the Darkwatch, patrolling the frontier for signs of supernatural threats, Jericho embraces his role as a guardian of the boundary between the natural and supernatural worlds, finding redemption not in the eradication of his curse but in how he chooses to use the power it grants him.
